An 84-year-old man dies from breakthrough COVID-19 fourteen days after diagnosis
An 84-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was diagnosed with COVID-19 less than 6 months after receiving second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. It is not known how, when or where he contracted the virus. He took precautionary measures and followed guidance from health officials, including wearing a mask. He was living at an assisted living facility, where he was assumed to be safe from the virus.
He was hospitalized, released after four days, but less than 12 hours later, breathing and cognitive issues sent him back to the hospital. Four days later his condition worsened to the point that, while wearing a BiPap mask that pumped oxygen into his lungs, he said goodbye to his family over FaceTime. Five days later and fourteen days after he was initially diagnosed, he was dead.
