Triple-vaccinated 79-year-old woman dies from COVID-19 less than a week after testing

A sixth wave of COVID-19 is sweeping across Ontario, and it's being driven by the highly transmissible BA.2 subvariant of Omicron, "extremely mild" for most, deadly to some.

The 79-year-old Belleville resident was having cancer therapy and was aware that the epidemic put her at risk. She was triple-vaccinated, wore a mask whenever she left the house and stayed in her tight family bubble.

Nonetheless, the virus found her. She died on March 22 2022 in a hospital intensive care unit, little than a week after testing positive, her body unable to recover from the COVID that had ravaged her lungs.

The respiratory viruses are out there.  Wastewater viral activity levels for COVID-19 , as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have reached the highest point since the Omicron surge in 2022. Chronic SARS-CoV-2 Shedding

Chronic viral shedding, a condition where the virus continues to be released from an individual's body long after the initial infection, has been observed in many infectious diseases, including COVID-19.  In such cases, individuals may remain asymptomatic or experience only mild symptoms while the virus persists. It remains detectable in repeated tests over an extended period and can still infect others even in nasal swab is negative. This was evident in our study.    Recent research by Conway et al. (2024) highlights the possibility of chronic SARS-CoV-2 infection, extending over several months and potentially years.
