Guillain-Barré syndrome after COVID-19 vaccination

Image
Hundreds of presumptive cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) were identified following adenovirus COVID-19 vaccines. Dozens of cases have been reported for mRNA vaccines. An 80-year-old male patient presented to emergency room with chief complaints of progressive, ascending bilateral lower extremity paresthesia, and weakness following COVID-19 (Moderna) vaccine. He received his first dose of Moderna vaccine about three months after recovery from COVID-19. Soon after vaccination he noticed bilateral lower extremity paresthesia (tingling and numbness), which was followed by progressive bilateral lower limb distal weakness, beginning at his feet and then ascending to involve his legs, knees, and hips. He was unable to maintain balance and started having multiple falls prompting him to start using a walker for ambulation. He then received the second dose of his vaccine in February 2021. The next morning, he was unable to get out of his bed due to severe bilateral lower extremit...

Canadian man diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome following 1st dose of ChAdOx1-S vaccine unable to get an exemption from 2nd dose

A ~30-40-year-old male was given a dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine in April 2021. Within days, he started to have excruciating back pain. Then came the tingles on the side of his face — and then, paralysis. He was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare condition that affects the nervous system. It can cause paralysis, muscle weakness, and even death.  This condition has been linked to COVID-19 vaccination with all types of vaccines and wide range of ages (eg,  Pfizer: 67-year-old male , Pfizer: 14-year old male ,   Astrazeneca: 66-year old  male) Review of 9 cases that occurred in persons with a mean age of 57.8 (range 20–86) years,  56.4% male, showed that most of the reported case-patients received ChAdOx1-S (25/39), followed by BNT162b2 (12/39) (Pfizer-BioNTech), Ad26.COV2.S (1/39) (Johnson & Johnson), and CoronaVac (1/39). The GBS rate after COVID-19 vaccination ranged from 1.8 to 53.2 cases/1 million doses. There w...

Fatal Guillain-Barré syndrome after AstraZeneca COVID-19-vaccination

Image
A  fit and healthy 77-year-old woman  got her first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine in July 2021. Within weeks she went from doing her own shopping and loading firewood to being paralyzed, relying on her children and hospital staff to hand-feed her. She also experienced delusions and hallucinations.  She died in hospital on September 5 last year, leaving four children, six grandchildren and three cats. The cause of death listed on her death certificate is "Guillain-Barre syndrome in the setting of recent AstraZeneca vaccination". The  Therapeutic Goods Administration  (TGA) of Australia has identified 11 deaths linked to the first dose of AstraZeneca – "eight were thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) cases, two were linked to Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), and one was a case of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP)". Post-vaccinal Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Image
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles in the central nervous system, with death usually occurring within two to five years of symptom onset.  In this case study, a previously asymptomatic 47-year-old male presented with left-sided weakness, declining speech, dysphagia, and recurrent falls for nine months, which began one day after receiving the J&J/Janssen viral vector COVID -19 vaccine. His family history of ALS included his grandmother being diagnosed with it.  After getting the vaccine, the patient initially experienced painful inflammation at the injection site. Within a week, he began to feel weakness in his left arm and a weak hand grip. Over the following months, this weakness progressed to his entire left side, and he started to experience declining speech, difficulty swallowing, and falling d...

Polyradiculoneuropathy after breakthrough COVID-19

Image
In late July 2021, a 67-year-old woman vaccinated with Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine (inactivated virus) presented a unique and challenging medical case that underscores potential neurological consequences of both infection and vaccination.  The patient's journey began with the onset of common COVID-19 symptoms: fever, myalgia, mild dyspnea, headache, and a non-productive cough. She had no pre-existing medical conditions. Upon her initial evaluation, her vital signs were within a relatively stable range, with the exception of a slightly decreased oxygen saturation (SpO2) of 91%. Physical examination did not reveal any significant findings. Her positive SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction test prompted further investigation, given the mild dyspnea and decreased SpO2. A chest computed tomography scan revealed peripheral consolidation and ground glass opacities, typical of COVID-19 pneumonia. Treatment commenced with Dexamethasone and Remdesivir alongside supplemental oxygen. Over the ...

Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy After COVID-19 Vaccination

Image
Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a rare autoimmune neurological disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system. Unlike Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) that develops rapidly and reaches its peak within a few weeks, CIDP is a chronic condition that develops more slowly and can last for months or even years. It is characterized by chronic inflammation and damage to the myelin sheath that covers and protects the nerves, leading to symptoms such as weakness, numbness, and tingling in the arms and legs. CIDP is estimated to affect about 1 to 2 people per 100,000 population per year, and it can occur at any age, although it is more common in middle-aged and older adults. Left untreated, 30% of CIDP patients will progress to wheelchair dependence.  A previously healthy 72-year-old man presented with a progressive tingling sensation and weakness below both knees for two weeks that started two weeks after vaccination with the 3rd dose of mRNA-1273. As the ...
